There was a competition held in 1966 for designing the country’s official flag. A local artist Mr. Reginald Samuel developed and designed the Antigua and Barbuda flag within 30 minutes. The flag’s drawing was unique and it thoroughly represented the values and expectations of the nation in the design. The winning design was embedded with the chosen anthem, coat-of-arms, and slogan. In 1994, it was decided that seven full points of the sun should represent the six parishes plus.

Antigua and Barbuda was ruled English men. In November 1981, the country received full independence from the United Kingdom, but the new born nation decided to use same flag introduced as an associated state in 1967.
