The national flag of Mauritius was approved upon freedom, March 12, 1968. It comprises of four horizontal stripes of equal width, colored (from upper to lower) red, blue, yellow, and green. Mauritius Flag was placed at the College of Arms on 9 January 1968 in London.

History of Mauritius Flag

Mauritius was long under foreign rule by both the French and British. The sole culture that resulted is reproduced in the national flag. The flag had one of only binary in the world with four equivalent horizontal bands. This flag was selected in expectation of independence from colonial rule, which happened on March 12, 1968, and was first raised on that date. Prior to freedom, Mauritius displayed the typical foreign flags of the British Realm—the Union Jack, had a version of the British Blue Ensign with a badge on behalf of the colony.

The flag has representative characteristics for each of its colors. Yellow is for light of freedom shining over the isle. While red imitates the national brawl for independence. The blue band is emblematic of the inward-looking nature of the nation and its location in the Indian Ocean. Lastly, green mentions to the yearlong greenery of the island, built on its subtropical weather. No changes have been made in the Mauritian flag since freedom in 1968.
