Sri Lanka flag comprises of multiple colors and a coat of arms. Sri Lanka Flag features a lion, border, and leaves, which are in gold color. The background behind the lion is maroon, while the perpendicular bands on the hoist side of the flag are green and saffron.

The Flag of Sri Lanka also contains two bands, which represent the main minority groups living in Sri Lankan – the Sri Lankan Tamils and the Muslims. However, the border of the flag signifies the unity of the nation.

History of Sri Lanka Flag

The lion has always detained a important role in the antiquity of Sri Lanka, and a flag bearing this sign was used in this nation since 486 BC when the initially King of Sri Lanka transported a flag containing a lion over from India. A banner including a lion carrying a sword along with sun and moon ciphers was first used in the state in 162 BC and was used until 1815.

In 1875, the flag of Ceylon’s Colonial Administration was used. This flag was a defaced pennant with the Arms of the Ceylon Government. This flag was being used in 1948. That similar year, the first flag of the Dominion of Ceylon was approved. This flag had the lion with a sword representation but did not have the vertical stripes of color. This flag was only applied until 1951. In 1951, the flag was adapted to comprise the perpendicular bands.

This lion was added to the ensign to represent the bravery of the Sinhalese. The flag also topographies four leave in all corner.
