The flag of Vietnam was designed in 1940 and hoisted during an uprising against French rule in southern Vietnam. Vietnam Flag has red color background that represents the goals of social revolution behind the Vietnamese national revolution. The star characterizes the five main classes in Vietnamese civilization—intellectuals, farmers, workers, businesspeople and military personnel.

The flag was hoisted by the Viet Minh, a communist-led association shaped in 1941 to oppose Japanese rule. At the end of World War II, Viet Minh leader Ho Chi Minh announced Vietnam self-governing and signed a ruling on September 5, 1945 accepting the flag as the flag of the North Vietnam. Flag of Vietnam DRV became the administration of North Vietnam in 1954 subsequent the Geneva Accords. The flag was changed on November 30, 1955 to brand the edges of the star sharper. Until the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, South Vietnam flew a yellow flag with three red bands. The red flag of North Vietnam was later approved as the flag of the unified Vietnam in 1976.
